About Our Suppliers
THE BLUE PIG COMPANY
All our bacon and sausages are supplied by The Blue Pig Company, owned by Andrew and Anthony Bradley who started this business on Mearbeck Farm, Long Preston in 2004 with just six Gloucester Old Spot piglets. They are the 5th generation of their family to farm in the Dales, and farm a herd of beef and a flock of sheep as well as the rare breed pigs. When the Gloucester Old Spot is crossed with the Saddleback, they produce the prized blue pig, considered to be the best bacon pig of all. The pigs live outdoors with access to woodland and barns for shelter, and are free to forage over 100 acres and the odd garden!! They do not use intensive commercial methods, preferring quality over quantity as you will find when you taste their delicious bacon and sausages, truly a memorable experience!
EGGS, MILK & BREAD
Our eggs are sourced locally and are free range.
Our milk is from our local dairy, Hawkswells of Burrell.
Our bread is baked on the premises in Masham Bakery, a small traditional village bakery.
RAYDALE PRESERVES
All our jams and marmalades are supplied by Derek and Lesley Kettlewell of Raydale Preserves who make all their jams and marmalades on their farm, School House Farm, Stalling Busk, where they also conduct tastings during the summer months. All their products are handmade in small batches, using locally grown soft fruits where appropriate. Their farm is well worth a visit, to see the conservation work they are carrying out and to enjoy the country walks they have opened up, as well as indulging in a tasting session to sample their many delicious products.
BIRCHFIELD FAMILY DAIRIES
Our farm butter is churned by hand at Birchfield Farm, Summerbridge, by Martin Whitley and his family, using milk from their Guernsey herd. He supplies it to us in a round ball as an interesting alternative to the more regular ‘pat’ of butter.
CEREALS FROM YOCKENTHWAITE FARM
Our cereals are supplied by Elizabeth Hird, from Yockenthwaite Farm, at the head of Wharfedale, in conjunction with Bread of Life. They have joined together to bring you special fresh-milled grains. Originally developed by Bread of Life to demonstrate fresh-milling, Elizabeth Hird began to offer Nutty Granola to her B&B guests. Guests responded favourably to this 'gorgeous' cereal and repeatedly asked to purchase it. Originally it was considered too expensive and time consuming to produce, but the demand could not be quenched and it is now available as a fresh milled product at farmers markets across the Northern Dales and B&Bs and accommodation providers across Yorkshire. Nutty Granola is a locally produced breakfast cereal product that is unique (like a toasted Muesli ) They use freshly milled grains and honey sourced locally as much as possible. Their original recipe is gorgeous with all natural ingredients and no additives or preservatives. Usually it is eaten with milk or Yoghurt. They also offer an alternative version with no peanuts and use spelt grain instead of wheat. Many people who are wheat intolerant can eat spelt with no problem. The shelf life of this fresh baked product is 6 – 8 weeks.
CHEESES
Our Wensleydale cheese is supplied by Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes, well deserving of a visit, a tour around their production unit.
Richard III cheese is produced in our own village at Fortmayne Dairy.
CONFECTIONERY
Our delicious chocolate is produced by Melanie and Leigh Torrance of Angel Chocolates in Reeth. They have just started their new business using top quality French chocolate and are already in great demand, selling their wickedly luxurious chocolates at Farmers Markets all over the Dales
